OVERVIEW
This presentation will discuss the use of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as a primary treatment modality for patients with Borderline Personality Disorder. The discussion will cover the proper treatment parameters for DBT, current literature on the topic, and an example of a 2-year case study utilizing DBT.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the indications for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), particularly for use in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.
2. Discuss treatment parameters for both the patient and the physician prior to engaging in DBT.
3. Define the current literature on the efficacy of DBT in the treatment of patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.
4. Discuss basic treatment strategies that are used more commonly in DBT than in other psychotherapies.
FACULTY
Tony Thrasher DO will complete his chief resident year in the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis in June 2008. In addition to his clinical duties at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Dr. Thrasher is an emergency room physician at St. Louis Metropolitan Psychiatric Center (MPC).
Following graduation from Iowa State University in 1998, he worked as a psychiatric nursing assistant at Mary Greeley Medical Center on both adult and adolescent inpatient units. During this time, he also worked as an emergency medical technician in Ames and Des Moines, Iowa, and helped to pilot after school programs for at-risk adolescents.
In 2000, Dr. Thrasher enrolled in the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM), in Kirksville, Missouri. While in training, he served as Class President for all four years and received national recognition as “Student DO of the Year” in 2002. Dr. Thrasher did his clinical rotations at several community hospitals in St. Louis and at the St. Louis Institute for Family Medicine.
Upon graduation from KCOM in 2004, Dr. Thrasher began his psychiatric residency at Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. During his residency, he has been involved with medical education and policy development. He received “Resident of the Year” awards from the Washington University medical school classes of 2006 and 2007.
Dr. Thrasher is a member of the National Health Service Corps. Upon graduation from psychiatric residency in June, he will commence his NHSC duties with the Healthcare for the Homeless in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he will work full-time with both clinical and administrative responsibilities.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA) through joint sponsorship of the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society and the Eastern Missouri Psychiatric Society. The St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society is accredited by the MSMA to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

From I-44 or I-64/Hwy 40: Exit at S Kingshighway Blvd and go south to Shaw Avenue (1 block south of I-44). Turn right (west) and go 3 blocks to Marconi Avenue. Registration
There is no charge for APA/EMPS members to attend this program. The non-member fee is $75. Non-members may pay by check, money order or purchase order. We strongly recommend advance registration by 5:00 PM, Monday, June 23. We will accept walk-in attendees on a first come-first served basis, but only after we accommodate pre-registered attendees.
